Olympic Mania
All I have to say today is that I LOVE the Olympics.
I love all of it. The anticipation of games that begins with the carrying of the torch is one of my favorite Olympic traditions. I can't wait for the exciting kick-off of the opening ceremonies, watching all of the countries proudly parading into the stadium is awe-inspiring. I'm obsessed with all of the sports; ice hockey, snowboarding, curling, bobsled, figuring skating, ski-cross, even that one sport which combines cross country skiing and riffle shouting. There is just something great about watching people at their best. I think the Olympics are a prefect combination of camaraderie, competition, and celebration.
This year with the Olympics being held in Vancouver, I find my self extra excited about the games. Maybe its a result of being inundated with Canadian praise and jubilation thanks to my very patriotic Canadian friend, but it has certainly worn off. Don't get me wrong, I want more than anything for the US men's hockey team to bring home the gold. But I can appreciate the excitement that is created from your home country hosting such a global event.
I think I also love the Olympics because it takes up SO much news coverage. This may seem weird at first glance, but think about it, instead of being focused on the latest celebrity rehab loser, news stations around the world are focused on the success of their athletes and the inspirational stories they bring to the games. It may sound awkward but watching the Olympians at work, truly makes me want to be my best. I'm under no illusions. I know that I'm never going to prefect a triple lutz or pull off a double McTwist 1260. However, I do know that if I commit myself to my dreams in a similar that these Olympic athletes approach their passions, I will be successful in becoming the best that I can be. And really I'm just a sucker for inspiration. I think anything that inspires people to be great is awesome. The Olympics just seems a prime and current example of that. So tune in and cheer on your countrymen and revel in the triumphs of the athletes.
Go Team USA!
